Junya Watanabe AW2006 military-inspired M-65 parka with detachable liner and hood. The 2006 show was imbued with layers of references to both American cinema and military garments. The collection featured models that were spitting images of Travis Bickle (played by Robert de Niro) from the 1976 film "Taxi Driver," down to the mohawk, piercing stare, and machismo.
Rightfully so, Tim Blanks recently heralded Junya's AW2006 collection as one of the top fashion shows of all-time, lauding the designer's ability to reinterpret common American working uniforms through the lens of "an outsider's eye trained wonderingly on an entirely alien culture."
This parka is Junya's interpretation of the classic American Vietnam-era M-65 (or M-1965) fishtail parka, designed with the intention of full functionality and warmth in extreme cold weather environments. Nearly all details are identical to the actual M-65 parka down to the inner quilted liner and fur-lined hood which are both fully detachable. Junya's parka, however, is cut to flatter the body as opposed to a classic M-65 which slouches and engulfs the wearer. This piece is truly a staple for both fans of Junya and military surplus.
