Rare Comme des Garcons four-way tote bag from 2003, in collaboration with Raymond Pettibon, in an impossible to find "brand new with tags" condition.
The canvas bag features four prints courtesy of Sadies Cole of early 2000's works by artist Raymond Pettibon, famed for his involvement in the 80's punk rock scene and the imagery he created for bands Black Flag and Sonic Youth. More recently, Pettibon would collaborate with Supreme in 2014 and with Dior in 2019.
The tote is constructed as if two tote bags were sewn together at the bottom, allowing for multiple methods of wear. The bag was most likely sold to celebrate the exhibition of works by Raymond Pettibon at the Comme des Garcons Aoyama store from December 2003 through January 2004. The promotional posters, which include the same works, I have included in my pictures.
I have identified and dated three of the Raymond Pettibon works:
Surfer: "No Title (small, mild “paints”…)", 2000, ink and pen on paper
Girl from Ipanema: "No Title (I Was Beginning...)", 2001, ink and pen on paper
American Flag: "Americans Could Be", 2001, watercolor on paper
I was able to find that two of these works are catalogued Sotheby's: "No Title (I Was Beginning)" shown in a Sotheby's show in 2017 and "Americans Could Be" in 2020 which was sold for $18,900.
